The summer wedding season is in full swing as I’m writing this month’s Guest Blogpost, which Kristy has kindly asked me to do. I’m Emma, a florist based at my studio in Semington, near Trowbridge in Wiltshire.
I started my business Stems Florist, seven years ago, having previously studied and taught languages. Looking for a new challenge and a more creative, practical career, I decided to study floristry part-time at college. With next to no previous knowledge, I was lucky to find a full-time job at a local florist’s soon after starting my course. There, I gained lots of valuable experience and new skills before starting my own business five years later.
I provide flowers for different occasions but weddings are a particular favourite. I love to see the bride and groom’s faces when I finally deliver their flowers on their big day. It’s quite a special moment, especially as flowers are such a big part of a wedding – they can really help create atmosphere or transform a venue.
I spend quite a lot of my time planning and preparing before it’s all (well, just my two!) hands on deck making bouquets, buttonholes, church and venue flowers. With the bride and groom-to-be I discuss ideas – colours, style and favourite flowers – and I recommend flowers which will be in season for their wedding, and importantly, within their budget. I’m usually shown photos of flowers they really like, which is extremely useful, but I also think you need to be quite a good listener. I’m always chuffed when I get a card or email after the event, telling me the flowers were exactly as they’d pictured them or how they really made their day.
I consider myself fortunate to work with such beautiful flowers every day. I wouldn’t be happy sitting at a desk job; I prefer to be on my feet, moving around. Being a florist does have its drawbacks – some very early mornings, long days and working in the cold – but I feel pretty lucky to do what I do!
